Water Safety & Swimming Lessons

Image

This article was printed in the Sunshine Coast Daily, Wednesday, January 14, 2004. Pg7

Did You Know?
  • It takes more than 40 muscles to frown, but only 17 to put a smile on your face!
  • When you are asleep your body produces as much heat as a 100 watt bulb.
  • What a scorcher! Australia receives around 3,500 hours of sunshine a year.
  • The Hawaiian alphabet contains just 12 letters and the Cambodian alphabet has 72 letters.
  • Super-Spider! In relation to its size a common house spider runs 8 times faster that an Olympic Sprinter.
  • And you thought “Advance Australia Fair” was tricky … the National Anthem of Greece has 158 verses!
  • There are only four words in the English language which end in “DOUS” - Tremendous, horrendous, stupendous and hazardous!
  • There are more plastic flamingos in America than there are real ones!
  • Blink and you'll miss it! Unlike human eyes turtles eyes close from the bottom up!

Keep Swimming

Two frogs fell into a deep cream bowl.
One was an optimistic soul.
But the other took the gloomy view.
"We'll drown," he lamented without much ado,
and with a last despairing cry,
he flung up his legs and said "Goodbye".
Quote the other frog with a steadfast grin,
"I can't get out but I won't give in,
I'll just swim around till my strength is spent,
then I'll die the more content,"
Bravely he swam to work his scheme,
and his struggles began to churn the cream.
The more he swam, his legs a flutter,
the more the cream turned into butter.
On top of the butter at last he stopped,
and out of the bowl he gaily hopped.
What is the moral? It's easily found ...
If you can't hop out, keep swimming around!

Super School Clinic

Image

Swim Australia's first Clinic was designed to highlight the value of maintaining school swimming programs.

The Super Schools Swim Clinic was conducted on the 12 February at Bayside Swimming, a Swim Australia Registered Swim School.

Olympian Leisel Jones, a Swim Australia Ambassador, was the feature. With the manner of a veteran, child-loving teacher, Leisel moved form student to student, giving tips and providing encouragement.

The year 3 and 4 students from Mary Mackillop Parish School went home with a bag of goodies, including a Swim Australia cap and certificate. Each child also received a Leisel Jones Born to Swim poster - personalised and autographed by Leisel.

The media were also informed that many swim schools registered with Swim Australia are well-equipped to deliver the swimming curriculum for Schools

Swim Australia's CEO, Ross Gage, said that "it was a wonderful event and many children went away with positive memories of swimming lessons".

The next Clinics will be on the Gold Coast and in Sydney and Melbourne.
